DANIEL MUDIE CUNNINGHAM
Originally a sketch in artist Daniel Mudie Cunningham’s 1995 art school journal, then reimagined and rendered as a neon artwork almost 30 years later, this piece is an ode to his youth and what it was like to grow up queer in Australia. The play on words, adapted from the adage “on a clear day you can see forever” (also the title for a 1970 film starring Barbra Streisand), this piece comes from Cunningham’s survey exhibition Are You There?, originally presented at Wollongong Art Gallery in 2023 and now taking to the streets of Southport for BIG CITY LIGHTS*.
Daniel Mudie Cunningham is an artist based on Gadigal land, Sydney. His practice draws upon and remixes the image streams of art history, queer politics, pop culture, performance and music. His recent career survey, Are You There? at Wollongong Art Gallery (2023) spanned 30 years of practice, including performance videos, photography, neon and writing. He also practices as a curator and critic, and currently teaches at the National Art School.
