KRISTE LEIGH STEINKE & SHERMAN FINCH

KRISTE LEIGH STEINKE & SHERMAN FINCH

presented as part of ISEA2024 EVERYWHEN

Unfolding like an animated painting right before your eyes, teleport to the Gulf Coast of Texas, where the curves of crashing waves dance with ocean creatures, and specimens from the seashore. A poetic exploration between the ocean ecosystem and the greater cosmos, you’ll be transfixed by this celebration of light and colour. Created using homemade pinhole cameras (from biscuit tins to soft drink cans), marvel at the magic captured of the rising and setting sun as it illuminates throughout the short film, casting a spell over it’s audience.

Artists

KRISTE LEIGH STEINKE

Krista Leigh Steinke is an interdisciplinary artist working in moving image, experimental photography, and collage. Her work fluctuates between the photographic and the abstract, presenting poetic reflections on time, place, perception, and the interconnection between human experience and the natural world. With the use of pinhole cameras, homemade filters, and other unconventional techniques, she draws meaning from her materials and process, often exploring photo media as a point of inquiry or embracing it as a catalyst for new possibilities such as an animation or installation. Informed by various sources (from art and photographic history, science and star maps, memory and the female perspective, to current events and the weather), her creative research often takes a diaristic form as a way to illustrate how the personal, social, and universal intertwine. The plight of insects, the pathway of the sun, a hurricane, a global pandemic – she is interested in both the obvious and more mysterious ways that nature impacts our lives while at times calling attention to broader issues surrounding the environment and our shared community.

SHERMAN FINCH

Sherman Finch is a hybrid artist and designer who investigates interactivity and user experience through both traditional and digital media. Sherman received a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and two Master’s degrees from the Maryland Institute, College of Art: a Multidisciplinary MFA from the Mount Royal School of Art and a MA in Digital Arts and Media. His work has been exhibited, performed, and screened at venues such as Roswell Museum and Art Center (NM), Amarillo Museum of Art (TX), Art League Houston (TX), Artscape (Baltimore), Site:Brooklyn (NY), Govennor’s Island Art Fair (NY), Alexandria Museum of Art (LA), Art Interactive (MA), Sarai Media Lab in New Delhi (India), Museum of New Art (Detroit), York Art Gallery (UK), London Experimental Film Festival (UK), among other places. He is a member of the collaborative group, The AKA Collective, co-founder of the LiveLab, and currently teaches in the College of Art & Media at Sam Houston University.
